Les Deux Alps 2006

Les Deux Alpes March 2006

Next seasons March ski / snowboard trip has been organised to take place in the resort of Les Deux Alpes, France. The resort is set at 1650 metres and offers fantastic scenery and a lively nightlife. It is renowned for its excellent snow conditions, high pistes and long hours of sunshine. Les Deux Alpes is a superb resort with excellent facilities for all levels of skier and boarder. There is extensive skiing on the long runs from one of the largest glaciers in the Alps, which also boasts great intermediate runs ideal for gaining confidence. The village is home to a wide range of après-ski activities including parapenting, night skiing, ice-skating, skidoos, indoor and outdoor swimming, bowling, squash, sauna, gym, ice grotto and helicopter trips making it a popular holiday destination.

Les Deux Alpes is a big party town described as like entering Las Vegas in the Alpes.

What it lacks in Alpine charm, it makes up for with the biggest glacier in Europe, high and snow sure slopes, a great park, some good off piste, and links to the world renowned 'resort' of La Grave.

Unless all you want is peace and quiet and lots of tree skiing, you could certainly do a lot worse than end up here for a season!

Bars - there is no bar in the Alpes to beat Les Bluets for chilled atmosphere, great people and the Croque Maison. Smokey Joes and Smithy's are always busy, for hectic après ski, theme nights and Tex Mex. The Secret bar under the Cret hotel is worth a try, as are Corrigans, Le Dutch, Hors Limites and Le Baron.

Clubs - L'Opera in Le Village is as close to an actual club as you will find in the Alpes, with three floors, loads of guest DJs, and a new live music venue. Le Brazilien is ever popular for predictable cheesy tunes, as is L'Avalanche, and La Casa is fashionable with the French and Italian crowds.

The main resort of the Dauphine region, Les Deux Alpes is very popular with the Brits. It offers fantastic snow and has a glacier (3568m), the largest in Europe, which allows summer skiing. Boarders will also like Les Deux Alpes, with its park, 'Nitro', and its October World Snowboarders' Meeting.
Advanced skiers should head to the La Fee area for testing black runs and to nearby La Grave for some of the best off-piste around.
Beginners and intermediates have plenty of choice, but should be aware that the level of skiing isn't accurate on the piste map. Firstly, many of the blue are quite challenging; secondly, these pistes can get very crowded (particularly at Le Jandri); and, finally, there is only one easy run back to the resort. The lift system, though, is very efficient.
In town, things are pretty good. It isn't the ugliest French resort, even if it is quite spread out. It does have a good range of shops and restaurants, plus varied and lively nightlife.

Overall, a good resort for those who want both good skiing and après-ski, with La Grave and the glacier particular pluses. Also, Grenoble Airport is only 90 minutes away.
