New Year Road Trip 2005/2006

26th - 31st January 2006

Two weeks had past since we were last down in Morzine so it was time to head back again! This time Penfold and Yellow flew down with the Wood brothers, Ivan and a bloke called Spuddy. Unfortunately the Carlina could not accommodate all six of us but thanks to Ute for trying anyway. This time we stayed a little further down the road in a hotel called the ‘aubergade’. Well in fact the brothers, Ivan and Spuddy stayed in the hotel while Penfold and Yellow stayed in the hotel owners own private house down the road, very strange set up but we’ll try anything once! Standard long weekend trip started with a load of beer in the Buddha bar and then on to see Russ in the Cavern Bar for a few Dr. Peppers!.

Up bright and early the next day (well about 10ish!) and off to hire kit for the boys. An hour later after queuing for the lift passes we were finally on the Pleney Bubble to start of yet another trip. Played around Les Gets today just to warm up then it was off down to the Carlina to say hello. (We had been there briefly in the morning though to collect the bindings that somebody left behind two weeks ago, not mentioning any names but if Little John wants to tell you all about where he left them I’ll leave  that up to him!!) After 5 hours in the Carlina we decided it would probably be a good idea to head back to our hotel for some dinner. Straight out and into the Irish Bar where we stayed for the evening being beaten by a bunch of drunk girls playing table football (we let them win of course!)

Day two involved a trek over to our favourite bar in Mont Cherie for lunch followed by a few runs of piste and a play in the board park. Then it was back over to Les Gets on the way back to Morzine. Guess what happened next?......Yep, we didn’t quite make it past the Carlina without being called in for the standard few beers! After dinner we ventured down to the sports centre to watch Morzine play Mont Blanc at Ice Hockey which was excellent, tiring just to watch!! Quick stop in the Irish Bar on the way back before wandering back to the hotel. Martin nearly made it back without shouting a load of abuse at some poor random guy……………….. but not quite!!

Day three was Sunday and everyone in the world was out on the slopes. Sitting on the lifts was like watching a load of ants running all over the mountain! We decided to head over to Avoriaz so it was up the Super-Morzine bubble. After doing our favourite ‘tree run’ we decided it was to busy so it was up the six man chair and off into Les Linderet. Woody took us over to Chatel where we stopped for lunch (for about 3 hours!) then decided it was time to head back. Unfortunately we were to late and by the time we reached Les Linderet all the lifts were closed! We made our way down to the bottom of the run to wait for a bus. (Fortunately there was bar right next to the bus stop!) Yellow and Penfold went out in the evening to the Irish bar where we met up with G and Severine. It was then off to the Opera nightclub (well it had to happen at least once!) Olivier arrived and it was onto the Vodka and Dark Dog, not good, especially when it meant not getting back to our accommodation until 0530 in the morning!

Day four and last day on the slopes. Back to Mont Cherie stopping in one of the bars at the top of Les Gets on the way. The sun was beaming down and we found six comfortable deck chairs to reside in! Could have stayed all day but decided to go to our favourite bar again for lunch. 4 bottles of wine, 3 bottles of cider and 2 beers later made the journey back to Morzine the quickest to date!! Last night was spent in the Irish Bar where we bumped into Freddie then it was home to pack, not good when you are half cut!!

Tuesday was the standard waiting for transfers, hanging around in airports and hoping your luggage arrives at the other end to meet you on the conveyor belt! And that ended yet another trip in Morzine and the old pocket a good few thousand pound lighter, oh well it was worth it! Only one thing left to say and that is if anyone finds themselves near Gatwick Airport in the near future, could you please stop at the bus terminal and see if you can find Penfolds duty frees hanging on the back of a trolley, ta!!!!! Bring on Les Deux Alpes!!! ……….Au Revoir!
